Celtic news: US media reacts to Auston Trusty’s display in Portugal defeat

Celtic star Auston Trusty was part of the US side that lost 2-0 to Portugal on Wednesday ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The defender was one of many stars who departed the Hoops to play for their countries during the international break.

However, Trusty’s time with his nation was far more difficult, enduring two defeats over the course of the week ahead of the USA’s hosting of the World Cup.

On Wednesday, he started against Portugal, and despite the defeat, his performance was widely praised.

Below, Football Insider has examined the media’s reaction to Trusty’s US display.

Auston Trusty praised by US media despite defeat

While Trusty’s recent Celtic performances have left much to be desired, against Portugal, he more than held his own.

The centre-back made numerous defensive contributions throughout, including nine clearances, six recoveries and two tackles.

While this was not enough to prevent a 2-0 loss, it was admirable considering that he was up against the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Pedro Neto and Vitinha.

As a result, the US Media were quick to acknowledge this and were impressed by his display.

Goal on 1 April gave the Celtic star a 6/10 before they commented: “Could have cut the angle instead of blocking the goal on Portugal’s goal.

“Can see why he made the decision, though, and otherwise, he was really good against a Portugal team that really tested him.”

Does Trusty have a future in the Celtic team?

Football Insider exclusively revealed that Celtic are set to pursue a defender in the summer transfer window.

The hierarchy feels that this position has been weakened this season after their injuries, and they are planning to address this issue.

However, this could add complications to Trusty’s future, with the defender clearly out of form at Celtic Park.

Therefore, if a new centre-back is brought in, it could see him fly further down the pecking order and struggle to return to the lineup consistently.

Therefore, Trusty may request a move away, especially as a lack of gametime could threaten his place in the US national team squad.

However, only time will tell if this comes about or if the incoming manager will instead see the defender as a vital first-team player next season.
