Celtic: Plymouth take clear stance on Lorent Tolaj sale as Bhoys plot summer swoop

Celtic are keeping tabs on Plymouth Argyle striker Lorent Tolaj with a view to making a move in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Bhoys are part of a number of clubs that have got the 24-year-old on their radar, and they are keen to make him part of the significant rebuild that is set to take place in their squad ahead of next term.

However, the Glasgow giants are not likely to find a deal easy to come by, with sources indicating that the Pilgrims are desperate to try and keep hold of their star man, who remains under contract until 2029.

The English League One outfit shelled out a fee of around £1.2million to sign the Swiss star from Port Vale last summer, and he has since rewarded their investment with 17 goals in all competitions so far this season.

Celtic’s transfer plans have already seen them identify the addition of a new striker as a top priority for the upcoming window, and Tolaj is among several candidates who are currently being explored.

Lorent Tolaj among League One’s best

Tolaj’s career has been on a clear upward trajectory since National League side Aldershot Town signed him from Brighton back in 2023.

The youngster had previously taken in loan spells with Dundee, Salford City and Cambridge United, but truly began to make a name for himself with the Shots.

He hit 25 goals in all competitions across the 2023-24 campaign, before being sold to Port Vale for an undisclosed fee, where he notched 22 goal involvements as part of their promotion into the third tier last term.

Tolaj moved again to join Plymouth this summer, and he has since cemented his position as one of League One’s brightest frontmen.

He ranks within the division’s top 10 for goals, goals per 90 and shots on target per 90, while his contributions in the final third have dragged Plymouth firmly into the play-off race after a poor start to the season.

Tolaj’s performances were always likely to have bigger clubs sitting up and taking notice of him, and Celtic have now got him in their sights as part of their imminent summer overhaul.

Johnny Kenny exit to pave way for new striker

Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Celtic may look to sell Johnny Kenny this summer, with fresh additions expected to force him even further down the attacking pecking order.

The 22-year-old is currently out on loan at Bolton Wanderers, after he had faced criticism from Bhoys fans for missing chances in the first half of the season.

The youngster’s future at Celtic Park is currently under significant scrutiny, and the club are likely to sanction another loan deal for next season, or even potentially a permanent exit.

Kenny could find himself on the chopping block in order to make way for a new striker to come through the door, and it is possible that he could be replaced by Tolaj, who he is set to come up against for his loan club on 3 April.
