Celtic ‘poised’ to sign Champions League stars after ‘£40m’ news – Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Celtic are “poised” to sign “Champions League calibre” players this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the Hoops can put “clear space” between themselves and Rangers by qualifying to the knockout phase next season.

Celtic finished the 2023-24 campaign eight points clear of their Old Firm rivals despite a close title race.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have the opportunity to prove their dominance on Saturday (25 May) when they face Philippe Clement’s outfit in the Scottish Cup final.

The Parkhead side have already won the Scottish League Cup this term.

Celtic can ‘race ahead’ of rivals Rangers, says Wyness

Wyness suggested Rangers will be ready to “make changes” this summer – but insisted Celtic can “race ahead” with a good display in the Champions League.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Celtic finished very credibly, they ended the season emphatically.

“I saw the celebrations in Glasgow after they won the league. They deserved it in the end, despite having a little falter themselves.

“There now has to be change.

“We all know that in Scotland – you can’t come second.

“Rangers will be ready to make changes, but Celtic are poised to sign some real quality, Champions League calibre players. Brendan Rodgers will know what it takes to be in that category.

“I believe about £40million was at stake when Celtic won the league and qualified directly to the Champions League group.

Rangers

“They’re in a very good position to kick on and if they can crack the league phase next season, then Celtic have got a huge chance to put clear space between them and Rangers.

“They are starting to race ahead already, and they deserve it fully.”
