Celtic potential signing could give Greg Taylor ‘headaches’ amid hijack – expert

Celtic have been urged to sign a more experienced left-back over Liverpool’s Owen Beck despite his impressive loan at Dundee FC.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland forward Frank McAvennie doesn’t believe Beck, 22, is the quality needed for European football but should be regarded as ‘one for the future’.

Celtic have been in the market for a new left-back with Taylor their only current first-team option in the position.

Football Insider revealed (August 14) that the Scottish Champions are looking to hijack QPR’s deal for Liverpool’s Beck.

Liverpool have an asking price of £3 million for the player who has only made three senior appearances for the club since breaking into the first team in 2021.

Beck made 28 appearances for Dundee last season, scoring twice and providing four assists during his time at the club.

“He’s a talented young player”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Brendan (Rodgers) is asking if he’s better than Taylor and I think he’s a good player but he might be one for the future.

“If they’re going to pay that money, is he the quality that we need to come in for Europe? I don’t know if he’s ready for that yet.

“I can understand why they’re talking about it, he’s a really good player and could give Greg (Taylor) major headaches.

“I’ll be honest with you, I’ll probably say it a few times this season, competition for places is the best thing you can have at a football club.

“If you’ve got somebody pushing you, and if you’re not on your toes, that’s what Greg (Taylor) needs.”
