Celtic set to complete ‘two big signings’ – Keith Wyness
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has urged Celtic to make “two big signings” as part of a late-window spending spree.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed now is the time for the Hoops to “push the boat out” and maintain dominance in Scotland.
Celtic have qualified automatically for the league phase of the Champions League, which starts next month and will run until January.
Football Insider finance expert Stefan Borson revealed on Wednesday (21 August) that the Hoops will bank a £30million windfall through their European participation.
Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi have been linked with moves away from Parkhead before the 30 August transfer deadline.
Celtic boss Rodgers ‘deserves’ signing spree, says Wyness
Wyness insisted Brendan Rodgers “deserves” backing in the remainder of the window.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’ve got to be active now without Matt O’Riley, who I think is a Champions League player.
“They have to strengthen to be able to make this eight-game Champions League run profitable for them.
“Two big signings would go a long way to making them more competitive in that environment, and I can see it happening.
“Celtic will have to be active.
“It’s crucial. They’ve got to maintain this dominance, and they’ve now got the resources to do it.
“This has been the fans’ gripe for a while, the board being tight with the money.

“Now is the right time for Celtic to push the boat out and give Rodgers some support. He deserves it.
“Let’s see if they can really give it a good go and benefit Scotland in general. It would mean a lot to the coefficient if they can progress.”
