Finance guru issues ‘£150m’ Celtic takeover claim after Conor McGregor update

Conor McGregor would have to shell out £150million if he is serious about a full Celtic takeover.

So says finance guru Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the UFC superstar’s interest in a football business venture.

The 33-year-old has reaffirmed his appetite to take over one of Celtic, Chelsea or Man United, per The Scotsman earlier this month (6 March).

McGregor is one of the world’s highest-paid athletes and insists that he “does not speak in jest” and that “all options are being explored.”

Kieran Maguire, a world expert in football finance, told this site last Sunday (13 March) that any takeover would likely be as part of a consortium.

Plumley suggests how much cash the Irishman would have to personally part with in order to complete a full buyout of the historic Glasgow club.

“There are a lot of things you can’t measure,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“It’s not an exact science deciphering how much a club is worth. Things like history and heritage play into it as well.

“But based on a few models of revenue and equity, Celtic’s enterprise value has hovered between £90m and £140m in the last few years.

“However, looking at in terms of the revenue they generated and the stadium, I think closer to £150m is a good evaluation.

“McGregor’s net worth is £150m. So theoretically, he is wealthy enough but you are taking all of his net worth to buy the club if it’s him on his own.

Dermot Desmond is Celtic’s largest individual shareholder and has offered no indication that he is willing to cash out.

The Hoops currently lead the Scottish Premiership and are into the Scottish Cup semi-finals after a 3-0 win at Dundee United last night (14 March).
