Celtic tipped to complete McGree signing as twist reported by Sky journalist - pundit

Alan Hutton has tipped Celtic to pull off the signing of Riley McGree from Charlotte FC thanks to Ange Postecoglou.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Australian manager’s influence could convince the 23-year-old to sign for the Bhoys.

As reported by Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph late on Tuesday night (23:50, 11 January), discussions between Celtic and McGree have stalled over personal terms.

The two clubs are said to have agreed a deal worth an initial £2.5million.

The Daily Record (10 January) claim Postecoglou has taken a hands-on role in discussions with the midfielder.

Despite the reported twist in talks, Hutton suggested the manager’s input will help get the deal over the line.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He’s an Australia international. Obviously been at Birmingham for the last 18 months and really impressed.

“So there were other teams that were chasing the signature. I think I’m right in saying that Postecoglou was hands-on in the actual negotiations.

“I think that could get it over the line. It shows you how much he wants the player.

“From a player’s point of view, to have the manager actually sit you down and speak to you and say: ‘This is what I’ve outlined. This is why I want you.’ It only breeds confidence. It can only be good for him.

“That’s probably why he’ll choose to join Celtic. An opportunity to go and possibly play Champions League football, win leagues.”

McGree, who had been on loan at Birmingham since October 2020, returned to Charlotte FC at the end of December.

Postecoglou already has experience of working with the midfielder, having called him up to the Australia squad back in 2017.

In other news, Celtic set sights on two more signings as attacker deal almost done.
