Celtic tipped to sign new defender as Liam Scales finalises move – expert

Celtic star Liam Scales has been backed to join Aberdeen permanently this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers defender Alan Hutton said Brendan Rodgers will have someone in mind to replace Scales if he does move on.

According to the Daily Record (23 July), Aberdeen boss Barry Robson is keen on bringing the 24-year-old to Pittodrie on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell last term.

The centre-back’s current Parkhead contract runs until 2025 after joining from Shamrock Rovers in 2021.

But the defender has made just 13 appearances for the senior side since his arrival.

When asked if Scales will be one of the players Rodgers will be happy to get off the wage bill, Hutton told Football Insider:I think if they have got someone else lined up to come in, which I imagine Brendan Rodgers would, then I think there is an opportunity for him to go and get regular football.

Is he going to get that at Celtic at this moment in time? I do not think so.

Celtic

He did well out on loan last season. He has come in and been involved in pre-season but ultimately you want to play week in week out, you do not want to got through all the hard work to be on the bench or not even make the squad at all.

There is a lot of talent there but you need to go out and prove it to everybody. I think that would be a good move. Aberdeen are a strong team that are always challenging for third place so it is something he would probably enjoy.
