Celtic tipped to sign two £5m youngsters in January – Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has backed Celtic to continue their “youth policy” with two £5million signings in the new year.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Hoops will take a “calculated gamble” in the transfer market after their European success.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has insisted he wants new faces in “one or two” areas in January to give “freshness” to his squad.

The Parkhead club have nine points in the Champions League league phase and could progress to a two-legged knockout playoff in February.

Rodgers’ side are also leading the Scottish Premiership and are well-placed to secure a domestic treble this season with Rangers struggling for consistency.

Celtic spent big in the summer window with deals to sign Adam Idah and Arne Engels – two of eight total deals in the off-season.

Celtic will continue ‘youth policy’ in January with estimated £10m raid, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Brendan’s produced some good European results and the club will know it is worth a lot to them if they back him in January.

“It’s a difficult window, but they’ll have a few ideas on how to help Brendan.

“A couple of young talents who can come in early next month and want to prove themselves could make the difference.

“It’ll be a calculated gamble in the transfer market.

“Brendan is in a strong enough position to demand new signings, but we know how quickly that can dissipate – and the board will remember.

“I know there has never been one manager in my career who hasn’t wanted at least one or two more players.

Adam Idah of Celtic

“Celtic won’t spend much, they’ll be continuing the youth policy.

“I would think they’ll look to bring a couple of young talents in at £5million each. That’s the sort of area I imagine they’ll be looking at.”
