Keith Wyness: Celtic set for ‘better than expected’ payout after Rangers calamity

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Celtic will receive a direct financial benefit after Rangers’ Champions League catastrophe.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Hoops will now bank a bigger share of the TV pool money allocated to Scotland.

Rangers were dumped out of the Champions League at the third qualifying round last week and will now play in the Europa League for the 2024-25 campaign.

Meanwhile, Celtic qualified directly to the league phase after winning the Scottish Premiership title last season.

It was reported that the Hoops banked an extra £7million after the same scenario played out last season – but the figures are set to change due to the new group format.

Celtic to earn slice of £726.5m payout after Rangers’ Champions League exit

As per Uefa, £726.5million in total will be paid out to league phase clubs based on the value of their TV market and club coefficient.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Celtic will benefit in the sense that they would have had to share the TV pool with Rangers if they qualified.

“They’ll now get a bigger share of that national pool.

“Scottish TV being a small market means the benefits won’t be as large as in England or Spain.

“But Celtic are certainly in line for more money than they would have expected now that Rangers are no longer in the competition.”
