Celtic to sign new goalkeeper? O’Rourke drops verdict amid Kasper Schmeichel latest
Celtic are exploring the possibility of signing a new goalkeeper with Kasper Schmeichel’s contract remaining uncertain.
Schmeichel left Anderlecht for Celtic back in July 2024 and has been one of Brendan Rodgers‘ most consistent performers.
The excellent displays in net saw Schmeichel prevent Martin Dubravka joining Celtic over the summer as the latter headed to Burnley instead.
However, the 38-year-old is now in the final years of his career and is carefully considering his next steps.

Kasper Schmeichel out of contract in the summer as Celtic open to Angus Gunn move
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Denmark international’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season.
Sources told Football Insider that Nottingham Forest’s Angus Gunn is eager to join Celtic after being pushed down the pecking order at the City Ground.
The Scotsman has failed to start a single game for the Garibaldi since joining on a free over the summer and with World Cup aspirations in mind, he must find regular game time.

The Hoops could face a goalkeeper crisis next summer as they scramble to find a replacement if the former Leicester City shot stopper is to depart as a free agent.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “We’ll be keeping tabs on Gunn but I don’t think Celtic probably right now will be looking to bring in a new keeper in January.
“Let’s see what happens in the summer because, obviously, Kasper Schmeichel’s contract is ending at the end of the season as well and then Celtic will be in the market for another goalkeeper.”
Brendan Rodgers to run down Celtic contract over frustrations with transfer policy
The contract situation with Schmeichel is yet another indication of the Glaswegian side’s poor planning which will force them into a keeper signing next summer.

Consequently, sources told Football Insider that Rodgers is running down his contract at Celtic following disputes over the club’s direction and transfer strategy.
The Bhoys failed to spend heavily in the summer, especially after a sensational 2024-25 campaign which rightly infuriated the Northern Irishman.
Premier League clubs are monitoring Rodgers’ managerial situation at Celtic and it could see him make a shock return to the English top-flight next season if he does walk out at the end of his current deal.
