Celtic told to accept Barkas offer amid ‘£5m’ claim – pundit
Celtic must “cut their losses” on goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers defender Alan Hutton said the Hoops were in a “difficult” position with Barkas given his price but letting him leave for free is their only option.
Speaking to Dutch outlet RTV Utrecht (4 June), the 29-year-old confirmed that his Parkhead contract has been terminated a year early and he will be able to leave the club for free this summer.
The keeper is looking forward to moving on from a disappointing spell in Glasgow that ended with a season on loan at FC Utrecht, who could not afford to offer him a permanent deal.
The Greece international cost Celtic a reported £4.5million when he joined in 2020 as is now set to leave for free.
When asked if letting the shot-stopper go for nothing is the right call, Hutton told Football Insider: “It is the right call at this point, he is never going to play.
“You do make mistakes in recruitment and that is one of them so they have to cut their losses. It happens at every football club after every transfer window, things sometimes just do not work out.

“I think the problem for Celtic is that they paid so much money. £4.5/£5m for a player in Scotland is a lot so to have to cut your losses is difficult.
“They have moved on, have got a solid goalkeeper there. Financially it is not ideal but at least they are secured in the position.“
