Celtic told to complete £40m signing spree – ‘they have to do it quickly’

Celtic have been told that they need to spend £40million on new players before the start of the upcoming campaign.

The Hoops are aiming to defend their Scottish Premiership title next season, after beating rivals Rangers to top spot by 17 points in 2024/25.

If the Glasgow giants were to defend their crown, it would be their fifth league success in a row, and their 56th in total.

However, so far this summer Celtic have only spent around £1m on new signings, as well as losing winger Nicolas Kuhn to Como.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Bhoys could easily spend up to £40m, considering the funds they have available.

‘Celtic are being caught at the top’

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Celtic are in danger of being caught by the chasing pack and “can’t afford to fall asleep at the wheel”.

Rangers, Hearts, and Aberdeen have all announced new investments in recent months, as they aim to catch up with Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Wyness added that if he were a Celtic fan he’d be getting a little bit concerned, and that they need to invest quickly due to their Champions League qualifying, which gets underway at the end of August.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I would think the fans would love to see 20, 30, 40 million spent. They can do it easily, and if they’re shopping in the same markets they’ve done before, they should be bringing in some quality players.

I would like to see more investment from Celtic, because there’s Hearts now coming in with Tony Bloom, Hibs with Bill Foley, Aberdeen have got some new investment they just announced last week. Those clubs are moving forward.

“Celtic cannot afford to be asleep at the wheel, but they’re going to have to do it quickly with those European games coming up. There’s no sign of it so far, and no investment in anything else. If I’m a Celtic fan, I’d be getting a little bit concerned.”

‘Celtic make Edouard transfer decision’

Meanwhile, Celtic are unlikely to pursue a move to re-sign Crystal Palace striker Odsonne Edouard despite speculation surrounding a return to Parkhead, sources have told Football Insider.

This comes after Rodgers confessed: “Odsonne hasn’t been on my radar, to be fair. I obviously know him, but it’s about a player who will fit into the structure of the team.” [The Sun]

The club have yet to plug the gap left by Kyogo Furuhashi, who left to join Rennes in January and has since moved to EFL Championship side Birmingham City.
