Celtic told to complete sales of Benjamin Siegrist and six other stars – expert

Benjamin Siegrist is just one of up to seven stars Celtic need to “get rid of” in this summer transfer window.

That is the view of former Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 32-year-old – claiming the shot-stopper’s situation is “no one’s fault but his own”.

First-choice goalkeeper Joe Hart retired at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, but Siegrist is unlikely to get the nod to replace the former Man City star.

Football Insider revealed last week (19 June) that Celtic are searching for a new shot-stopper and have already missed out on Austria international Patrick Pentz.

Siegrist has been at Celtic for two years but has managed just two senior appearances in that time.

Siegrist nailed on to go as Celtic clear ‘dead wood’, says McAvennie

The Swiss star, who started his career at Aston Villa, still has two years left to run on his Parkhead contract.

McAvennie told Football Insider: “I don’t feel sorry for him, he’s been at the club for a long time.

“I thought he would be number one when he came in because he was a good keeper.

“But it’s no one’s fault but his own. He hasn’t been able to stay fit or perform to a good standard in a Celtic shirt.

“I think it’s time for a fresh challenge, it’s time to move on.

“He’s deadwood, he’s one of six or seven players who you’ve got to get rid of.

“Brendan’s got to get them out of the door. They’ve been at the club so long that they’re not going to make an impact now – just let them go and play somewhere else.

“I wish Siegrist the best, but he won’t get back in.”
