Celtic told to sell Johnston in January as his Hoops career is over – pundit

Frank McAvennie insists Mikey Johnston must leave Celtic to save his career.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the attacker is “simply not good enough” to make the grade at Parkhead.

As quoted by The Herald (3 December) Ange Postecoglou wants Johnston to “step up” with star man Jota sidelined.

However, the 22-year-old attacker failed to make the bench as Celtic beat Ross County 2-1 on Wednesday (15 December).

He has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season but has only contributed one assist.

McAvennie claims Johnston has had plenty of opportunities to prove himself but has failed to take them.

“This has been going on for years now,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“People have been waiting for Johnston to take that next step and he just hasn’t done it.

“I know he’s had injuries but he has never even looked like he will do it.

“I think a move away has to be the best thing for him now. He does have talent.

“I just think he’s in the gap where he isn’t good enough for Celtic but is still a talented boy.

“He’s barely getting a game and when he does play he is really struggling.

“Sell him. I would like to see him moved on for the benefit of his own career.

“Ange gave him a chance with Jota out and he’s not done anything.

“Some fans might disagree but he’s simply not good enough for what Ange is trying to build.”
