Celtic victims of major injustice after BBC footage of Giorgios Giakoumakis emerges – pundit
Alan Hutton has suggested St Johnstone’s equaliser against Celtic would have been disallowed if VAR was operation.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers right-back said there was a “strong enough” pull on Giorgios Giakoumakis that prevented him from getting to the ball.
As shown on BBC’s Sportscene (8 October), Andrew Considine pulled on the 27-year-old striker’s shirt as a free-kick was played into the box.
Alex Mitchell slotted home to level the score for the Saints deep into stoppage time.
However, two minutes later Giakoumakis found a last-gasp winner for the Celts.
Hutton suggested that the tug on the forward’s shirt affected the outcome of the free-kick.
“VAR would definitely look at it,” he told Football Insider.
“Every goal VAR has a look to make sure there is nothing going on.
“There is definitely a pull. Considine has a fair hold of Giakoumakis’ top and you are thinking if he didn’t he would have probably got his head to it.
“That then affects the goal so I think it possibly could have been overturned if I am honest.

“It is going to be something that, with VAR coming in, would definitely help clear up these decisions.
“Again, it is subjective but I do believe there was a strong enough pull on Giakoumakis for him not to be able to go and head the ball so it definitely would have been looked at.“
