Celtic victims of major injustice as Carl Starfelt footage analysed – expert

Frank McAvennie has claimed St Mirren should not have been awarded a penalty against Celtic on Saturday (11 February).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said he won’t “have a go” at Carl Starfelt for giving away a spot kick because he doesn’t feel it was a penalty.

As shown on Viaplay Sports (11 February), St Mirren were awarded a penalty after a tackle from Starfelt brought down Greg Kiltie in the box.

Referee Steven McLean immediately pointed to the spot and the decision was upheld by the VAR officials.

Mark O’Hara fired past Joe Hart for what was ultimately a consolation goal as the Hoops went on to win the game 5-1 and progress to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

McAvennie wasn’t convinced that the match officials made the right decision.

I do not know if it was a penalty,” he told Football Insider.

I would hate to have a go at him because he pulled out [of the challenge].

I do not know what the rules are anymore. I really don’t.

I am confused and I listen to the so-called experts and none of them know either. This is beyond belief. VAR is really causing all sorts of problems.
