Celtic victims of major injustice as controversial Liel Abada footage emerges – ‘no one knows the rules,’ says expert

Frank McAvennie has slammed VAR after Liel Abada’s Celtic goal was disallowed on Wednesday (21 December).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker insisted Abada’s goal against Livingston should have been allowed to stand.

As shown on Sky Sports (22 December), the 21-year-old thought he had put the Celts 3-1 up but after referee Euan Anderson was sent to the monitor to have another look at the incident, the goal was disallowed for offside.

According to the new offside law, a player is only offside if the defender is judged not to have deliberately played the ball.

The Hoops managed to hold on to their lead and the game finished 2-1.

When asked for his assessment of the decision McAvennie told Football Insider:The rules change all the time.

I can’t understand it. The problem that footballers and people watching the game have got is that there is no consistency. This is in Scotland and England.

It was the defender that hit it so it does not matter if you are offside or not. It used to be that if the defender touched it you are not offside.

So I do not know what the rules are. They keep changing them. I think they just change them to make up for the mistake they have made. It really is embarrassing.

Ange Postecoglou’s remain nine points clear of Glasgow rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Their next test is against St Johnstone on Saturday (24 December).
