Celtic vs Rangers postponement latest as Met Office issues new weather warnings

Celtic and Rangers have both seen their Scottish Premiership matches this weekend thrown into doubt after new weather warnings were announced.

The Met Office has released yellow warnings for wind in Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of England.

Rangers and Celtic are locked in a battle for the Scottish Premiership title with Hearts, who currently hold a three-point lead over the Gers and a five-point advantage over the Hoops.

Danny Rohl’s side will host Dundee United on Saturday in a game that will temporarily take them to the top of the title if they emerge victorious.

Celtic’s form has been up and down in recent weeks, but they will hope to claim a big three points away at Dundee FC.

Met Office releases weather warning for Scotland

Football Insider exclusively revealed last week that Celtic need Champions League qualification to afford a planned busy summer of recruitment.

That task has become dramatically more difficult over the last few months, however. Scotland has lost its second Champions League spot due to poor performance in Europe, meaning only the league winners will qualify.

This is due to UEFA’s coefficient, which ranks the average performance of each country’s clubs in Europe.

With Rangers knocked out at the Europa League group stage, and Celtic in the play-off, Scotland’s coefficient took a battering and will now see the league reduced to one Champions League spot, one Europa League spot and two Conference League spots.

The race for the Scottish Premiership had, of course, already been intense, but every game now has an increased importance due to the magnitude of the financial reward on the line.

With that in mind, Celtic and Rangers will be hoping that the weekend’s action goes ahead. The Met Office‘s warning will be a concern, however, with both games falling in areas which have received yellow warnings for wind.

Other Scottish Premiership games set to be affected

Further down the table on Saturday, Hibernian are set to host Kilmarnock at Easter Road, Motherwell will host Falkirk, and St Mirren will take on Aberdeen.

All three games are also at risk of postponement as per the warning, which will cover the entirety of Scotland.

On Sunday, league leaders Hearts will be in action when they travel to take on Livingston.

Derek McInnes’ side will hope to see that game go ahead, with the perceived benefit of having games in hand often quickly developing into a curse.
