Celtic will sell £6m Ajeti before 17 January after confirmed news – pundit

Frank McAvennie expects Albian Ajeti to be sold by Celtic this month following the arrival of Daizen Maeda.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, slammed the decision to sign the Switzerland international for £4.5million rising to a potential £6m in the first place.

Ajeti, 24, has scored three goals in 17 outings for Celtic this season.

He went through a positive spell in September, scoring his three goals in five days during a spell of games against Ross County and Real Betis.

The goals have since dried up and, following the arrival of Japan international Maeda on 31 December, McAvennie is expecting Ajeti to leave the club.

“It’s not worked for him, it was never going to work,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I look at centre forwards, I was one, it’s something I know about and can talk about.

“The boy never did it in England. He never even got close to a game at West Ham.

“Sebastien Haller was rubbish at West Ham and he was miles ahead of Ajeti, I don’t know who thought he would do well up here.

“He’s been very lucky to have a few good moves to clubs that are better than him.

“He has had so many chances to stake a claim and to impress and he just hasn’t done it.

“There were a few goals earlier this season but that was it, he scored a couple and that was it.

“He never moves, he thought coming here would revive his career but he wasn’t prepared to work for it.

“We have Kyogo and Giakoumakis, not that we have seen much of him, and now we have Maeda.

“Ajeti will be gone before the Hibs game (17 January), I’m expecting that now.”
