Kieran Maguire: Celtic 'will struggle' after 'leaked' £100m Government reveal

Celtic will struggle to find a partner that pays as well as Dafabet when the Government outlaws gambling sponsorship in football.

So says finance expert Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about a report by the Daily Mail on 23 September.

It is claimed that the Government is set to impose an outright ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship in the UK.

That will reportedly leave a sponsorship vacuum well in excess of £100million throughout the country.

Celtic signed with Philippine bookmaker Dafabet in 2018 in a record-breaking sponsorship agreement.

The deal with the Hoops runs until 2025, by which time it will have run for seven successive seasons.

And Maguire claims that Celtic may struggle to find a big-ticket sponsor who can pay the same rates as Dafabet.

“I suspect this was leaked,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“While the betting industry isn’t the only payer in town, for a club the size of Celtic, it is the biggest.

“It’s delivering eyeballs to a demographic that the gambling industry is interested in.

So Celtic will struggle to find another sponsor that pays as well. They are going to have to work hard.

“If the only thing that happens is a ban on front-of-shirt sponsors, that will effectively be being used as a scapegoat.

“There are broader issues. The proliferation of gambling marketing that exists in other arms of the media, for one.

“If you are going to allow gambling pre-match and post-match, this ban won’t make a single iota of difference.”
