Championship: Chris Davies to fear the worst at Birmingham City as Lee Carsley makes himself available for club job

Championship club Birmingham City could yet see a change in the dugout in the coming months, with England U21 manager Lee Carsley now ready to go into club football.

Blues boss Chris Davies has been facing significant pressure throughout the season, with the ambitious outfit hopeful of achieving an immediate promotion back to the Premier League after winning League One last term.

The second city club’s Knighthead ownership group are determined to achieve quick success at St Andrew’s in the coming years, and that has seen plenty of scrutiny placed on Davies this season.

Speculation regarding the 41-year-old’s long-term future will surely be set to ramp up again, given the fact that Carsley is now eyeing a move into club management, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon account.

Managerial changes in the Championship have been frequent once again this season, and Davies will surely be fearing the worst after news of Carsley’s change of heart.

Lee Carsley now on the hunt for the right club job

Football Insider revealed at the start of January that Carsley was considered by West Brom as a potential candidate to replace Ryan Mason, before they ultimately opted to make the ill-fated appointment of Eric Ramsay.

However, Carsley’s connection to Birmingham has also seen him linked with a move to take charge at St Andrew’s on several occasions in recent months.

The 52-year-old spent two seasons with the Blues during his playing career, before returning in a coaching capacity in 2017-18, and even enjoying a brief stint as their caretaker boss.

Carsley is now ready to move back into the world of club football after signing a deal with a new agency, according to Nixon.

The FA man is eyeing up potential options within club football for his next assignment, and the FA are willing to allow him to leave if the right job comes up for him.

Given both his previous connections with Birmingham and the recent managerial links, news of his impending move into day-to-day managerial will surely have Davies on red alert.

Birmingham’s season is gradually fading out.

His team are currently on a run of just one win from their last six Championship games, and with the prospect of a spot in the play-offs looking increasingly unlikely, questions regarding his position are sure to be raised again in the coming weeks.

Birmingham fans ready for change

Birmingham fans fell in love with Davies as he led them to an instant return to the second tier last term, but that has quickly turned sour in 2025-26.

The former Tottenham and Leicester assistant manager has left supporters frustrated with the lack of progress on the pitch, as his team have squandered several opportunities to kick on and take their campaign to the next level.

As expected, the well-backed Blues will comfortably avoid relegation in the Championship, but there remains a feeling around the club that more was on perhaps on offer, and the team have failed to take it.

Birmingham’s play-off hopes are fading with every passing game, and with Carsley now opening the door to a change of jobs this summer, there is plenty of food for thought for the club hierarchy.
