Championship: Supercomputer updates promotion prediction after Hull City and Southampton results
The Championship promotion race took another twist on Saturday, with many clubs dropping vital points.
While Southampton continued their winning streak to move further into the playoffs, Hull City suffered another damning defeat to fall to sixth.
However, many of their potential challengers did not fare much better, with Derby County and Norwich City also losing.
With Wrexham set to play Birmingham City on Sunday, there is a chance for the club to close the gap to sixth place to one point.
As a result, Opta on 11 April has attempted to predict who will finish in the Championship playoffs amid a tense end to the season.
Hull City backed to remain in Championship playoffs
With no victories in their past three matches, things do not look good for Hull City.
Saturday’s 2-1 defeat away to Sheffield United was a tough one to take for many, and has put their playoff position in a precarious situation.
| Team | Playoff percentage odds |
| Southampton | 94.88% |
| Middlesbrough | 94.60% |
| Millwall | 92.90% |
| Hull City | 71.18% |
| Ipswich Town | 14.64% |
| Wrexham | 22.82% |
| Derby County | 8.78% |
Nevertheless, Opta has insisted that Hull City should still end the season in the playoffs, giving them a 71.18 per cent chance of achieving this.
Southampton are also pretty certain to end the season in this position at 94.88 per cent, with Millwall and Middlesbrough expected to join them.

Wrexham have a 22.82 per cent chance of sneaking into the top six, something that will surely increase if they manage to secure a victory over Birmingham City on Sunday.
The supercomputer believes that Derby County are the only other side with a reasonable chance of finishing in the playoffs at 8.78 per cent.
Who will get relegated from the Championship?
With Sheffield Wednesday already down, Opta believes that Leicester City and Oxford United will now join them in League One next season.
The Foxes have an 85.30 per cent chance of finishing inside the drop zone, becoming the second team in successive seasons to suffer back-to-back relegations from the Premier League.
Oxford United’s future is less certain, with the U’s having a 52.46 per cent chance of going down.
Portsmouth are yet to be entirely ruled out at 31.26 per cent, while West Bromwich Albion stand at 18.14 per cent.
A return to League One for Blackburn Rovers this season is also seen as highly unlikely at 10.24 per cent.
