Charlie Nicholas delivers Leeds promotion verdict

By Harvey Byrne

Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal forward Charlie Nicholas believes that Leeds will finish in the play-offs at the end of the season.

The Yorkshire giants were held to a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage on Tuesday evening against Fulham with an early own goal from Tim Ream being cancelled out by a stoppage time Tom Cairney wonder strike.

The stalemate has seen Garry Monk’s team remain in fourth place with eight point separating them from seventh, while nine points are keeping them from the automatic spots with 10 matches left.

Now, Nicholas believes Leeds will finish in the play-off places and has told that with the size of the club’s support, anything can happen.

“I don’t think they’ll do better, I think it will be the play-offs for them,” started Nicholas speaking about Leeds in Wednesday morning’s Premier League Daily show.

“Wood has been remarkable goal scoring wise. Lots of tap-ins, but he can score other types of goals.

“Garry Monk has done a fabulous job, but at the same time I think if you said to him right now ‘you’re going to be in the play-offs’, I think he would say ‘that’s a big achievement for Leeds.

“Gerry (Francis) and I are talking about some of the sizes of these clubs. Home and away Leeds’ support that they have, anything can happen with momentum.”

Leeds are currently far exceeding pre-season expectations after a disappointing 13th place finish under Steve Evans in the last campaign.

They have not finished in the top six of the Championship since their play-off final defeat against Watford in 2006, while the famous club have also been out of the top flight since 2004.

Monk and his team will now be looking to end that 13-year wait, but firstly they will be focusing on picking up all three points once more against QPR at Elland Road on Saturday.

In other Leeds news, Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic was critical of the Whites’ display on Twitter after the Tuesday draw.
