Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has opted to make a “bold” prediction that Everton will grab their first win in the Europa League against Atalanta.
In his Europa League predictions on Sky Sports, the 55-year-old has backed Gylfi Sigurdsson to score first with Everton winning 2-1.
The pundit admitted the prediction was “bold” referring to the heavy 3-0 defeat Atalanta inflicted on Everton in September, as a reason not to back the Toffees in this game.
It’s worth noting Atalanta have yet to taste defeat in the Europa League this season, sitting top of their group with eight points from four games.
Nicholas also admitted that “anything other than defeat” would actually be positive for Everton, giving their performance in the tournament so far.
“I’m going for them to get a result here though and I’m going to be bold and back Gylfi Sigurdsson to fire them to victory,” Nicholas said.
Everton have only one point from four games, having drawn one and lost three, along with having the second worst goal difference in the tournament with -7.
The Toffees have scored only three goals which is the same amount that Atalanta have conceded.
David Unsworth is still in temporary charge of Everton, following Ronald Koeman’s dismissal on October 23, with this being his second Europa League game.
The caretaker manager oversaw the Toffees 3-0 defeat courtesy of Lyon, and the manager hasn’t fared better with his other four non-European fixtures.
Unsworth has only achieved one win across five games, and that was a 3-2 victory over Watford where Everton had to come from two behind to win.
