Charlton Athletic agree Alex Mitchell deal – sources

Charlton Athletic have agreed a deal to sign Millwall defender Alex Mitchell, sources have told Football Insider.

Charlton have had a bid accepted for the 22-year-old’s services by the Championship club as he closes in on an exit from The Den.

Mitchell is now set to complete his move to the League One side after spending last season on loan at Lincoln City.

The centre-back will become Charlton’s third signing of the summer after they have already secured deals for Will Mannion and Luke Berry.

Alex Mitchell closes in on Charlton Athletic move

Mitchell has spent the past six years with Millwall after joining their academy in 2018.

But the defender hasn’t been able to force his way into the first-team picture at The Den, having made just one senior appearance for the club since earning a professional deal.

Mitchell has built up his experience in recent years after taking in loan spells at Bromley, Leyton Orient, St Johnstone and Lincon.

His temporary switch to Lincoln proved successful after he was named in the starting lineup for 39 of his 41 appearances last season.

Mitchell started in all of the Lincolnshire club’s final 15 games of the campaign, where they narrowly missed out on a play-off place despite winning 10 of those matches.

Charlton have now agreed a deal to take Mitchell to The Valley as they look to strengthen their defensive options for next season.

The centre-back is set to become the south London club’s second signing in just a matter of days after Football Insider revealed on 17 June they have agreed a deal to sign experienced midfielder Berry.

Charlton endured a disappointing campaign last season after finishing 16th in the League One table.
