Charlton Athletic agree Luke Berry deal – sources

Charlton Athletic have agreed a deal to sign midfielder Luke Berry from Luton Town, sources have told Football Insider.

Berry will leave Luton upon the expiry of his contract on 30 June after spending seven years at the club, having played a role in their promotion to the Premier League in the 2022-23 season.

As a result of starting just four games last season, he decided to leave Kenilworth Road in search of increased game time.

The 31-year-old will now sign a two-year contract with Charlton after a breakthrough in talks, with a medical to take place imminently.

In Luton’s first season in the Premier League, Berry featured 17 times, but started just two of those appearances as he struggled to make his mark on the first team.

He played a similar role in the club’s promotion season in 2022-23, making 21 of his 27 appearances from the bench, with just four starts in the Championship.

Charlton have now offered the midfielder a chance at playing regular football in League One.

The club are looking to record a better finish than their disappointing 16th-place last time out after Nathan Jones took charge in February, winning just four of his first 16 games.

Jones has worked with Berry previously during their time at Luton, and made his signing a priority.

The midfielder also has previous experience in gaining promotion from the third tier, having done so with Luton in 2018/19, his most recent spell in the division.
