Charlton, Reading and Stockport race to sign Mallik Wilks – sources

Charlton, Reading and Stockport are racing to sign Sheffield Wednesday attacker Mallik Wilks, sources have told Football Insider.

The League One clubs are exploring the possibility of securing a loan or permanent deal for the Sheffield Wednesday forward.

Wilks, 25, is a proven performer in the English third tier, having previously won promotion with Hull City and with Wednesday, recording a one-in-two goal contribution rate at that level.

After he struggled for game time with Wednesday in the just-completed season, making 18 appearances in all competitions, interested clubs will now make their moves.

Wilks joined Wednesday in 2022, helping the club earn promotion from League One, but struggled for game time in the 2022-23 season with just 26 appearances, two goals and five assists.

His 18 appearances and one goal in 2023-24 made his position at the club clear, with an exit now on the cards and interested clubs circling.

The winger’s form for Hull in 2020-21, with the club competing in the third tier, saw him score 22 goals and provide nine assists – numbers the interested clubs hope he can recreate.

Charlton and Reading endured frustrating seasons last time out, finishing 16th and 17th respectively, but will hope to further their ambitions and push higher up the table next season.

Stockport, meanwhile, racked up 92 points as they won League Two by four points ahead of Wrexham and will be looking to remain in League One next season.

All three clubs see Wilks as a difference-maker to their respective ambitions, and somebody who could change their fortunes.

With the possibility of a permanent transfer on the cards as well as a loan move away from Wednesday, Wilks is likely to want to leave in search of more playing time.
