'Cheap in today's market' - Exclusive: Bruce Wowed after Leeds agree terms of new signing

Alex Bruce claims that the £16million fee Leeds United have spent Helder Costa could be considered “cheap” in comparison to other transfers.

The former Leeds defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits the 26-year-old has not hit the heights expected since signing from Wolves but believes he could make a major impact next season.

Leeds confirmed on Tuesday the permanent capture of the Portuguese winger in a £16million deal after an initial £2million loan fee.

Bruce believes that Costa has shown his ability in flashes at Elland Road and believes he will have a big part to play in the Premier League next season.

Bruce told Football Insider: “Obviously there was a deal in place and they’ve stuck to it – we know what his potential is, we’ve seen he can perform as well as most players on his day.

“He might not have hit the heights that they were expecting but if they get promoted, which I’m sure will happen, they’ll be looking for him to add some Premier League experience to the squad and really be a positive next season.

“I could name you a few players who have been bought for a lot more money who might make you think £16million is cheap in today’s market.”

Costa has made 44 appearances for Leeds across all competitions this season, with his goal against Stoke City on Thursday his fifth of the season.

He already has 25 Premier League games of experience to his name, as well as one goal and two assists.

In other Leeds United news, Michael Brown has dropped a “sensational” transfer claim at Elland Road.
