Finance guru: £40m-a-year Chelsea alliance 'damaged' beyond repair after official update

Chelsea will be relieved that they have resumed their sponsorship with Three – but the relationship between the pair has been irreparably “damaged.”

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Blues’ £40million-a-year alliance with the telecommunications giants.

Three paused their front-of-shirt partnership with Chelsea following the government-imposed sanctions on now-former owner Roman Abramovich in March.

American billionaire Todd Boehly completed a £4.25billion takeover from Abramovich last month (28 May).

And Chelsea announced last Thursday (16 June) that Three have resumed marketing activities with immediate effect.

But Plumley warns that relations between both parties will have been damaged by the saga.

“There will be a relief,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Front-of-shirt sponsorship is always a big deal. It was worth around £40m per season to Chelsea. The relationship will no doubt have been affected.

“Okay, it’s come full circle now and the takeover has happened and that is a positive step for the partner and the club. But given the change in ownership and the background to that, I think it’s likely we’ll see a new sponsor in time.

“There will have been a bit of damage given what’s gone on. How can there not be?”

Chelsea recorded commercial income of £153.6m for 2020-21, the last financial year accounted for.

Thomas Tuchel’s side begin pre-season ahead of 2022-23 against Club America in Las Vegas on 16 July.
