Chelsea ace Jadon Sancho shares fitness update ahead of Southampton clash

Chelsea winger Jadon Sancho has taken to social media to share a fitness update ahead of their Premier League game with Southampton on Wednesday (December 4).

The 25-year-old started his second consecutive Chelsea game in their 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday (December 1) after missing their previous six games across all competitions due to illness and general fitness concerns.

Unlike the 2-0 Europa Conference League win over FC Heidenheim in midweek, however, Sancho didn’t play the full 90 minutes against Villa, coming off in the 71st minute for Noni Madueke.

New manager Enzo Maresca has primarily deployed Sancho in the Premier League, with Sancho playing 383 Premier League minutes across seven appearances, five of which were starts, providing three assists in the process.

Jadon Sancho raises Chelsea fitness concerns

With eight games across the next four weeks, Maresca will need his players at full fitness, thankfully Chelsea’s vast squad depth gives them a unique advantage.

Either one of Mykahlo Mudryk or Christopher Nkuknu, who have all had limited Premier League game time, playing a combined total of 328 league minutes, could step in at a moment’s notice.

Staying fit will be Sancho’s main concern, however, taking to Instagram to let fans know he’s taking good care of himself and that he is in “recovery.”

Maresca has his side playing well, sitting in third, two points above current champions Man City, with 25 from their opening 13 games.

It remains early in the season, however, and just six points separate Chelsea and their latest opponents, Aston Vill,a down in 12th.
