Alex Teixeira has told Shakhtar Donetsk that he wants to join Liverpool in the January transfer window, Football Insider sources understand.

Chelsea are also tracking the Brazilian playmaker but Teixeira has informed the Ukranian club he wants to move to Merseyside.

Teixeira has liked several stories on his Instagram account in the last 24 hours that have reported Liverpool’s interest in signing him.

A source close to the situation has told Football Insider that the player has also told Shakhtar in private conversations of his desire to move to Anfield.

Liverpool have already made a £24.6million bid for the Brazilian and, as revealed by Football Insider, are preparing an improved offer of £29million.

Liverpool’s American owners Fenway Sports Group have sanctioned a fresh move for Teixeira after a delegation led by chief executive Ian Ayre returned from a meeting in Florida about signing the star in the January window.

Teixeira, who is currently with Shakhtar at their training camp in Florida, gave the Merseysiders a further boost by telling Brazilian newspaper Globo that he would like to quit the Ukranian club.

“I would like to move in this transfer window and have told them [Shakhtar] that,” Teixeira said. “They have received a very good offer and they are working on a solution.

“But if I don’t go now then I will leave in the summer. After six years in Europe and with Shakhtar we are ready to move and I have spoken to my wife and daughter”

He has scored a staggering 22 goals in 15 league matches this season, and has struck 26 times in 26 appearances in all competitions for the Ukranian club. Shakhtar value the 26-year-old at £39million and are keen to get a fee close to that price.

As revealed by Football Insider, Chelsea have have been in contact with Teixeira’s representatives and have offered a contract to the prolific attacking midfielder.

Teixeira added: “It is my desire to move to a big league and I know that the English league is very strong. I am ready and I know that I will grow up a lot there. I am aware that two big clubs such as Liverpool and Chelsea are interested but I haven’t given my word to either of them.

“I am not ruling out other leagues but I do want to play in the Premier League. In my mind, it is the strongest in the world. I want a challenge and to further my career there.

“My aim is to move to a big club so that I can well there and get a place in the Brazil squad. Everyone knows that it is hard to achieve and I need to leave here to achieve that goal.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wants attacking reinforcements after losing three of the team’s four senior strikers to injury for most of his reign and due to the ongoing difficulties experienced by Christian Benteke.

Teixeira is an attacking midfielder who can play in all three positions behind the centre-forward and is renowned for his eye for goal. He is not yet a full Brazil international but he has scored three goals in seven games for the country’s Under-20s.

Teixeira joined Shakhtar Donetsk from Vasco Da Gama in 2010 -and has been persistently linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
