Chelsea are in points deduction strife as ‘big mystery’ takes new twist – Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Chelsea will be “firmly in the crosshairs” of the Premier League more than a year on from their intra-company hotel sale.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the “mystery” around the legality of the deal is “strange”.

Chelsea’s latest financial report showed the Londoners were allowed to reduce their losses under PSR by selling two hotels on the Stamford Bridge site in an intra-company transaction worth £76million more than a year ago.

However, finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider (7 July) that it is “very strange” the deal hasn’t shown up on the Land Registry – while there has also been no confirmation from Chelsea or the Premier League on the matter.

Top-flight clubs can lose a maximum of £105million over three years before incurring punishment under PSR, including potential points deductions.

Chelsea ‘mystery’ over hotel sale – points deduction on the radar, says Wyness

Wyness claimed the Chelsea hotels deal will be “front and centre” of the Premier League’s concerns.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s really a big mystery over whether this transaction is going to be allowable under PSR.

“The Premier League still haven’t made a statement on this.

“This is something I’ve got my eyes on, and a lot of other people are also watching this.

“It’s strange that it hasn’t been approved.

“We know the sale has gone through and there is a new management company involved, but we’ll have to keep an eye on this going forward.

“I think this will be firmly in the crosshairs of the Premier League right now.

“Anything to do with PSR, because of all the controversy, will be front and centre for them.

“Something like this is under a lot of scrutiny with a lot of eyes watching it, so they’ll be right on top of it.”
