Chelsea chiefs savaged after ‘dangerous’ twist – ‘they’re on a different planet’

Chelsea have spent lavishly on transfers since the takeover from Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022 – but have seen little improvement on the pitch.

In a recent development, The Times have reported (11 April) that the Blues’ parent company 22 Holdco Ltd has lost more than £1billion over the past two seasons.

22 Holdco also own French club Strasbourg, but the majority of spending has come at Chelsea.

This season, Enzo Maresca’s side sit sixth in the Premier League table – with the top five clubs qualifying for the Champions League.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has claimed almost all of Chelsea’s most expensive signings are not shining at the club.

‘Chelsea spending is becoming dangerous’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted there has not been a material impact on the pitch despite Chelsea’s lavish spending.

The Blues are well-placed to win the first trophy of the Boehly and Clearlake era in the Uefa Conference League this term.

But Wyness insisted the situation at Chelsea is becoming “dangerous” with fans unhappy with developments on and off the pitch.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I was wondering if Jeff Bezos’ spaceship was heading towards Planet Chelsea the other day.

“Chelsea are on a different planet in terms of the money they are spending.

“It’s weird. They’ve lost £1billion and it’s crazy.

“Boehly and the Clearlake group are obviously very clever guys – but what I haven’t seen is a real improvement in the squad.

“They’re in a big dogfight to qualify for Europe, and they could end up even in the Europa League or Conference League.

“They had a very poor result against Ipswich.

“Cucurella, Fernandez, Mudryk, Fofana – these are big investments, and they’re not shining.

“They’ve had time. There’s disquiet from the fans with Maresca, and I think it’s becoming dangerous.

“We’re at that tipping point now.”

Chelsea set for lucrative shirt deal

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Friday (11 April) Chelsea are well placed to agree a lucrative front-of-shirt sponsorship deal if they qualify for the Champions League.

The Premier League side have played without a primary shirt sponsor throughout the current campaign after their deal with Infinite Athlete expired last summer.

Stamford Bridge chiefs have now turned their attention to a shirt deal for next season, with Todd Kline spearheading their commercial operations following his arrival from Tottenham.
