Chelsea could be forced into '£100m+' payout after journalist's Marcos Alonso claim - pundit

Chelsea could be forced into a “£100million-plus” summer “rebuild” in defence with Marcos Alonso the latest player to be linked with a move away.

That is the view of former Leeds striker Noel Whelan, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid the latest update on the Blues’ defensive exodus.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (5 May), Alonso wants to leave Chelsea this summer and is a target for Barcelona – with talks ongoing between all parties.

Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, and Antonio Rudiger have also been extensively linked with summer exits – with the latter two out of contract next month.

Alonso, who has been a relative mainstay in the injury absence of Ben Chilwell, is contracted until June 2023.

Whelan hinted a “complete rebuild” is on the cards at Stamford Bridge.

“You’re talking a lot of money to replace those players,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“That’s a lot of money walking out the door to other leagues for these knockdown fees.

“You’re talking in excess of £100million in order to go out there and bring in a similar amount of quality. They really need to sign those players in order to continue competing, as well.

“You need a big squad if you’re a club like Chelsea. If you want to be successful, as Chelsea do, then there are a lot of games in a season.

“It’s going to be a complete rebuild. It’s interesting to see how it’s going to take shape in time for next season.”

Chelsea sit third in the Premier League and are in the box seat to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

American businessman Todd Boehly has agreed a deal to purchase the Stamford Bridge club.
