‘Chelsea could have to pay £20m+ to terminate Raheem Sterling’s deal’

Chelsea would likely have to pay more than £20million to terminate Raheem Sterling’s deal this summer.

The London giants are looking to move the 30-year-old on over the coming weeks after he’s fallen further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens.

The winger spent the latest campaign on loan at Arsenal after being frozen out by Enzo Maresca following the Chelsea manager’s arrival last summer.

Arsenal decided against signing Sterling on a permanent basis after he failed to provide much of an impact during his time at the Emirates Stadium.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Chelsea would probably have to pay 70 per cent of Sterling’s £30million remaining liability to terminate his deal this summer.

Sterling, who is under contract until June 2027, is believed to be on more than £300,000 a week after making the move to Stamford Bridge in a £50million deal from Manchester City in 2022.

The 82-cap England international has registered 19 goals and 15 assists in 81 appearances for Chelsea, but he hasn’t featured for the club for more than a year.

Chelsea to make Raheem Sterling exit decision

Borson insisted Chelsea are unlikely to terminate Sterling’s deal as it could cost them up to £21million.

He told Football Insider: “They have to actually sell these players or pay them off, and that’s extremely expensive.

“In terms of continuing with a player with one year left of his contract and how that might look and maybe they’ll pay 70 per cent of the contract up, try and do it when you’ve got someone like Sterling.

“I think he’s got two years left on his contract. He’s paid maybe £350,000 a week all in.

“Let’s say £300,000 a week for the sake of discussion. So, he’s got £30million of liability left.

“Are they going to pay 70 per cent of that to get him out the door?

“You wouldn’t think so, would you?”

Chelsea plan to accept Josh Acheampong offers

In terms of another potential exit, recruitment expert Mick Brown told Football Insider Chelsea are planning to accept offers for Josh Acheampong this summer.

Maresca’s side are prepared to entertain offers for the 19-year-old despite him only agreeing a new contract until 2029 seven months ago.

Tottenham are among the clubs eyeing a move for Acheampong, while Newcastle United are also keeping tabs on the highly-rated defender.
