Chelsea could match Liverpool and Man City amid verdict on £40m Robert Lewandowski swoop - pundit
Noel Whelan has insisted Chelsea will want to sign one of the “world’s best strikers” after the signings of Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland at Liverpool and Man City respectively.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Robert Lewandowski, 33, would “score goals” if given the right service at Stamford Bridge.
According to the Daily Star (11 June), Chelsea and Man United are ready to swoop for Lewandowski this summer as they believe his £40million Barcelona swoop will fall through.
The Poland striker has made clear his desire to leave Bayern Munich, but the Catalan side are currently unable to sanction any big-money arrivals due to financial problems.
Whelan insisted Lewandowski would need to “hit the ground running” at Chelsea in order to make a move worthwhile.

“I think Chelsea will be looking at what other teams have done with Nunez and Haaland,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“They’ll be wanting to have one of the world’s best strikers themselves.
“You can never take away what Lewandowski has done in his career. Look at Cristiano Ronaldo as well, they are pretty similar.
“They keep going, stay fit. Lewandowski is a player who will score goals if he gets the right service – there’s no doubt about it.
“But you would be paying a lot of money for a 33-year-old who would maybe only be around for two seasons.
“He’s got to hit the ground running to make it worthwhile.”
