Chelsea could sign £40m Raheem Sterling ally after journalist’s update – pundit
Frank McAvennie has suggested Allan Saint-Maximin and Raheem Sterling could forge a formidable attack for Chelsea next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Saint-Maximin, 25, would be a “good addition” to the Blues.
According to Chris Waugh of The Athletic (19 July), Chelsea have made an enquiry about the forward.
However, the £40million price tag Newcastle have placed on the former France youth international is said to have put off Thomas Tuchel’s side.
There is also said to be interest in the forward from other European sides, including Tottenham.
Saint-Maximin has four years left on his contract at St James’ Park.
He joined Newcastle from OGC Nice in 2019 for a fee of around £16million.
When asked if he thought the forward could make the switch to the London club, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I don’t think he’ll want to go.
“Chelsea is a huge club, Newcastle are not yet but they’re going to be. It’s whether or not he wants to stay and be part of that build.
“He’s the one player I’d have kept because they were hopeless until Eddie Howe came in.
“For £40m he’d be a good addition. Him and [Raheem] Sterling playing up front, that would be interesting. They’d score lots of goals that’s for sure.“

Saint-Maximin made 37 appearances for the Magpies across all competitions last season.
In those outings, he scored five goals and provided five assists.
