Chelsea bombshell: Key senior player told he will not get new contract - Times

John Terry has been told by Chelsea that he will not get a new contract from the club, according to a report.

The Times claim that the club captain has been informed in talks with senior executives that this will be his last season as a player.

However, Stamford Bridge chiefs are keen to agree a new role with Terry that reflects his stature at the club and makes use of his skills, with discussions centred around coaching and ambassadorial roles.

In return, the Times report that Terry will not agitate for a transfer in the January window and that he will turn his back on a staggering £12million-a-year offer from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, who are managed by his former Chelsea team-mate Gustavo Poyet.

Chelsea have moved to act quickly and avoid a repeat of the embarrassing situation last season in which Terry went public with his frustration at not being offered a new deal before the club made a hasty U-turn and offered him a one-year extension on reduced terms.

Terry has been on the fringes of the team this season and has started just four of the club’s 15 Premier League matches.

Antonio Conte’s hugely successful change to a 3-4-3 system two months ago has frozen Terry out of the team and he has not been able to win back his place.

Summer signing David Luiz has been one of the three centre-backs along with Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta and they have contributed to a record of just two goals conceded in the team’s last nine matches.

Chelsea are top of the Premier League with a haul of 37 points from 15 matches, 12 of which they are won, and are aiming for a 10th consecutive league win when they travel to Sunderland on Wednesday night.
