‘Chelsea don’t like Moises Caicedo deal as contract talks pursued’

Chelsea may be moving to extend the contract of Moises Caicedo for reasons other than his performances on the pitch, it has been suggested.

The midfielder made the move to Stamford Bridge from Brighton back in the summer of 2023 for a British-record £115million [Sky Sports], signing an eight-year contract until the end of the 2030/31 season.

Chelsea beat out Liverpool to the signing of Caicedo, who initially endured something of a mixed start to his time in London.

This season though, the investment that the Blues made in the Ecuador international looks to be paying off.

Moises Caicedo prompts contract talk after excellent campaign

Although a promising start to the season under new manager Enzo Maresca has fallen away, the midfielder has impressed from an individual perspective.

Caicedo has won multiple end of season awards at Chelsea, earning him some deserved recognition for some excellent performances.

It also means The Telegraph have reported that the Blues are now keen to hold talks with the midfielder this summer about an improved and extended deal, despite the fact his current one has six years still left to run.

Now, Simon Jordan has suggested that Chelsea may be doing that not because of Caicedo’s performances, but because they are unhappy with an element included in his current deal they want protection from, such as a release clause.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy had claimed that the midfielder needs to perform at the standard he has been for longer to justify being given a new deal.

In response, ex-Crystal Palace chairman Jordan noted: “When Chelsea bought players and put them on long-term contracts they capitalised the cost of them over a longer period of time and then the league said you can’t do that anymore.

“Now if they’re able to extend the contract they might be able to capitalise them over a longer period of time which means his depreciation is less. It might be that.

“Or there might be some conditions inside that contract which they don’t quite like for the commercial exploitation of him. There might be a release clause in it, I don’t know.

“There might be something inside his contract which suggests that they’ve gone back to the table to renegotiate something with him and ultimately the only renegotiation they can do is extend the contract, give him some more dough to get a clause out they don’t like.”

Chelsea may have ulterior motive with new deal talk

Football Insider Verdict

On the face of things with six years remaining on Caicedo‘s contract, the Blues are not going to be at risk of losing him on the cheap any time soon as things stand.

That ought to mean that right now there is no pressure on them to renew his contract, and doing so would take away one potential incentive for the midfielder to continue performing to this standard.

With that in mind there may well be another reason behind this potential new agreement, and a clause in the contract would make sense in that respect.

Such a term in the deal could put Chelsea at risk of losing him for less than they might want given the form he is now producing.

But if he is to give up the potential get out that clause offers, Caicedo will want something in return, hence the improved contract.

As a result, this may be an agreement that makes sense for those involved in a different way to what may have been initially imagined.
