Chelsea are in the middle of their most difficult period of the season following a dramatic downturn in results and performances but the club have finally been handed some positive news.

The Blues were defeated 2-1 by Aston Villa on Saturday (22 February) which continued their dismal run of form.

Enzo Maresca’s men have only won three games in their previous 12 in all competitions which has led to question marks being raised of the Chelsea boss for the first time since he took on the role.

The Blues have been knocked out of the FA Cup and have dropped down to seventh in the Premier League table during that period.

Chelsea have dealt with issues at the back in that time, particularly when it comes to their goalkeepers.

Filip Jorgensen cost his team a point against Villa when Marco Asensio’s late shot slipped underneath him to give Unai Emery’s team the win.

Wesley Fofana is set to return to the Chelsea squad

However, Maresca’s defensive options have been given a significant shot in the arm ahead of the run-in.

According to Fabrice Hawkins, Wesley Fofana will be returning to the matchday squad for their game against Southampton on Tuesday (25 February).

The France international has been on the sidelines since the start of December with a hamstring issue and was expected to be out for the remainder of the season, with this return being well ahead of expectations.

The news has been met with a positive reaction from Chelsea fans due to how unexpected it is.

Fans have called for him to replace Levi Colwill who has been struggling for form lately, with one claiming watching the Chelsea graduate again would “finish” them.
