Chelsea have made ‘very expensive mistake’ after deal agreed – Stefan Borson
Chelsea have made a “very expensive mistake” after mishandling Raheem Sterling’s situation at Stamford Bridge.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the west London club have taken a “big risk” by loaning the winger to Arsenal.
Sterling joined Arsenal on loan on the final day of the transfer window, but there isn’t a permanent clause included in the deal.
Football Insider revealed on 31 August Mikel Arteta’s side are paying less than half of the 29-year-old’s £350,000-a-week wages.
Sterling was one of several Chelsea players who were exiled from the first-team squad prior to completing his temporary move to the Emirates.
Chelsea needed to handle Raheem Sterling situation better
Borson insisted a player of Sterling’s profile needed to be handled in a much better way by Stamford Bridge chiefs.
He told Football Insider: “They are effectively taking £6million of mitigation of their cost up front but knowing that there is big risk because one of two things happens.
“Either he’s a big success at Arsenal, which means Arsenal could have finished above Chelsea, won the league or stopped Chelsea getting into the top four, and then he comes back and they still don’t want him even though he succeeded at Arsenal and they still have the challenge of selling him while he’s on a wage of over £300,000.
“Either that happens or in the worst-case scenario for Chelsea, he goes over to Arsenal and ends up being on the bench there as well.
“Yes, Arsenal have paid £6million, but they also hand the player back with relatively limited resale value next year.

“It’s not a well-managed situation. A player of that cost needed to be handled in a better way.
“It’s a very expensive mistake.”
