Chelsea hit by ‘Tottenham’ blow in stadium twist – Stefan Borson

Chelsea may not have the same amount of space Tottenham did to allow them to continue playing at Stamford Bridge if they decide to build a new stadium.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it will be a “major” project for the London giants to carry out.

The Standard reported on 11 September Chelsea have now finalised the £80million purchase of a 2.47-acre site next to Stamford Bridge as they consider plans to redevelop the stadium.

But the west London club will not take possession of the site until 2027 to provide time for residents to be re-housed during a leaseback period.

Building a new stadium is known to be a costly business after Tottenham’s state-of-the-art facility set them back around £1billion.

While Spurs had to play some of their games at Wembley towards the end of the project, they did manage to remain at White Hart Lane for a large portion of the development phase.

Chelsea could have to leave Stamford Bridge to complete project

But Borson has questioned whether Chelsea will be able to do that due to the lack of space around Stamford Bridge.

“I’m not sure they have got the amount of space Spurs had,” Borson told Football Insider.

“If you remember what Spurs did, for most of the build, they built on an adjacent site.

“That meant they were able to keep the stadium open for most of the build.

“I don’t know if Chelsea can do that.

“I don’t know if there is the sufficient space to do that. It’s not a simple project.

“We are talking about a major building project in one of the most expensive, highly regulated from a planning perspective areas of central London.

“It will be a challenge for them.”
