Chelsea manager news: Major update on Mauricio Pochettino getting sacked after ‘blanking’ Todd Boehly

Mauricio Pochettino is set to remain as Chelsea manager until the end of the 2023-24 campaign – at the very least, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the Blues board have faith in the 51-year-old despite Sunday’s (25 February) 1-0 defeat against Liverpool after extra time in the League Cup final and there is no immediate prospect of him being sacked.

Jurgen Klopp’s injury-ravaged side were almost unrecognisable following a raft of late substitutes but a Virgil van Dijk header handed them victory at Wembley.

Chelsea, who were branded “billion-pound bottle jobs” by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, failed to lay a glove on Liverpool in the extra-time period.

The manner of the defeat has been described as embarrassing by swathes of fans and pundits since full time at Wembley.

However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that the result will not lead to a “knee-jerk” reaction from the Blues board.

Pochettino was appointed last summer (2023) as a long-term project – with Chelsea’s youthful squad needing direction after the sacking of Graham Potter.

Todd Boehly and his Clearlake Captial ownership group have already parted with Potter and Thomas Tuchel since they arrived in 2022 and are reluctant to dispense with another manager.

Sources say “no rash decisions are likely” between now and the summer despite Chelsea’s underperformance in the Premier League.

It is believed Pochettino’s performance and future at Stamford Bridge could then be re-evaluated in the off-season.

After coming agonisingly close to securing his first trophy in English football, Pochettino was dejected as he walked up the stairs at Wembley to receive his runners-up medal.

Supporters on social media claimed that the former Spurs boss appeared to have blanked Chelsea’s American owner during the presentation.

Chelsea have now lost each of their last six domestic cup finals in a run stretching back to 2019.

The Londoners sit 11th in the Premier League and are some 17 points adrift of the top four with 13 games of this season remaining.

Pochettino’s side are next in action against Leeds United in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday (28 February).

In other news, Chelsea must take emergency action to avoid points deduction catastrophe.
