Chelsea must cancel summer signings – ‘it’s the tipping point, fans are worried’

Chelsea are showing no signs of stopping their scattergun spending in the transfer market ahead of the summer window.

The Blues have spent more than £1.5billion on signings since the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital was finalised in 2022 but are yet to win a trophy under their ownership.

Industry expert Mick Brown has told Football Insider (28 April) that Chelsea have moved ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens – in what could be their marquee summer move.

Meanwhile, former signings like Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Joao Felix and more will return to Stamford Bridge from loan spells this summer.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has insisted Chelsea are at the “tipping point” with parent company BlueCo posting a £1billion loss for the last two years alone.

Chelsea ‘must pull back’ in the summer transfer window, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Chelsea must show signs of “pulling back” in the summer window with “fans worried” about the club’s incessant spending.

The Blues have already pre-agreed deals to bring young trio Estevao, Dario Essugo and Kendry Paez to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Wyness insisted Chelsea’s transfer policy is a “serious question mark over the stability of the club”.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think the question is – when does this spending get really dangerous?

“I think we’re at that tipping point now. These numbers are becoming a serious question mark over the stability of the club.

“I know the fans are worried, there have been protests. They think the ownership have gone too far.

“We’ve got to see some signs of Chelsea pulling back.

“Coming up to a transfer window is not usually when you see that happen, but we’ll have to watch them very closely and see if they stretch themselves again.

“It’s a strange thing, planet Chelsea.”

Maresca sack update from Chelsea

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Monday (21 April) that Enzo Maresca has the backing of the Chelsea board despite unrest in the fanbase.

It is believed chairman Boehly and Clearlake Capital chiefs have recognised they cannot keep chopping and changing in the dugout.

Maresca left Leicester to join Chelsea last summer (2024) and signed a contract running until June 2029.
