Chelsea have been reportedly linked with a move to sign Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld and need to move for him quickly, or risk losing out on his signature to Manchester United.
The Sun reported back in April that the Blues were considering an offer to sign the 29-year-old after he failed to agree a new deal with the North London club.
However, news of a Chelsea move has gone quiet since and the latest report suggests they are no longer in the picture.
The Sun reported on Monday that Manchester United are now in talks with Spurs to try take the £50million-rated centre-back to Old Trafford this summer, with manager Jose Mourinho wanting to secure a move by Thursday before the World Cup commences.
Alderweireld’s contract situation with Spurs has still not been fixed and Chelsea must try pounce this week to beat Man United to his signature.
The Spurs ace looks destined to depart as it stands and he would be an unbelievable signing if he arrived at Stamford Bridge.
He would walk straight into Chelsea starting XI to give their backline a fresh resilience and if Man United stand a chance of securing his services then surely Antonio Conte’s side too.
It is very rare that Chelsea and Spurs conduct transfer business, but the former should make an irresistible offer for the world-class defender to help them get back in the race for the Premier League title next year.
They will find it almost impossible to find someone with such a proven track record in England and a deal makes perfect sense.
In other Chelsea news, the club must fast-track this loan star to the first team next season.
