Chelsea news: Expert issues emphatic Conor Gallagher claim after showdown talks

Noel Whelan has backed Conor Gallagher to make a breakthrough at Chelsea next season following talks with Thomas Tuchel.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 22-year-old midfielder could emulate the success of countryman Mason Mount once he establishes himself at Stamford Bridge.

According to football.london (31 May), Gallagher has had assurances from Tuchel that he will not be a “bit-part” player for Chelsea next term during showdown talks in recent weeks.

The report claims the England international wants to stay with the Blues past the summer window and fight for his place in the starting eleven.

Gallagher took to his Instagram on Tuesday (31 May) to pen an emotional farewell to loan club Crystal Palace after his fruitful season-long loan during the 2021-22 campaign.

He notched eight goals and three assists in 34 league appearances for the Eagles.

Whelan insisted that return shows Gallagher is ready for a “major role” at Chelsea.

“I’m sure he’ll play a major role next season,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“The part he has played at Palace has shown what a talent he is. He’s had rave reviews, goals, and assists – so why wouldn’t they give him an opportunity?

“They are overloaded in that midfield area, but there could well be a few outgoings. He is a British-based player as well, and that’s really valuable to a club like Chelsea.

“He’s made his name in the Premier League now.

He’s got that quality – just look at Mason Mount and how he adapted. There’s no reason Gallagher will be any different.”
