Chelsea news: Stefan Borson drops ‘huge’ verdict as deal terminated

Chelsea are unlikely to receive the money from their sleeve sponsor deal with Fever after the agreement appears to have been terminated.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the London giants are still facing “huge” challenges off the pitch despite their recent on-field progress.

Chelsea agreed a deal in August for Fever’s logo to feature on the men, women and academy players’ kits for this season.

But sports business expert Lukasz Baczek reported on 19 December the deal has now “ended prematurely” due to the entertainment discovery platform’s financial issues.

Fever’s logo has been removed from Chelsea’s sponsor page on their website.

Football Insider revealed on 23 August the deal is believed to have been worth between £6-8million for the campaign.

Chelsea face issues after shirt sponsor blows

Borson admitted it will be an issue for Chelsea in a season where they still don’t have a front-of-shirt sponsorship deal in place.

He told Football Insider: “It seems to me that they haven’t received the money because had they received it, they wouldn’t have taken Fever off.

“If you think about it, let’s say Fever paid for the entire season and had actually settled the invoice, then their financial struggles would be irrelevant to Chelsea.

“You can only assume they failed to pay and, therefore, they have been removed from the sleeve.

“That is an issue because it’s a bad debt and they probably won’t be getting the money.

“In a season where they don’t have the front of shirt, it’s problematic.

“On the pitch, things are working for Chelsea, but in terms of the operating performance of the business, there is still huge challenges there.”
