Chelsea owners fund another big cash injection – CEO source explains all

Chelsea owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have invested huge money since buying the club in 2022 with the Blues’ losses skyrocketing since the takeover.

Revenue fell from £513million to £469million last season – while Chelsea’s underlying losses stood at £214million.

Boehly and Clearlake have injected £450million into the club in the form of share issues this season with Companies House submissions revealing that £180million of shares were issued in recent weeks.

The London club are on course to get a financial boost next season with Enzo Maresca’s side looking set to qualify for the Champions League.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has suggested why Chelsea are such a “cash-hungry machine”.

Chelsea transfer instalments are crippling finances, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted paying instalments on previous signings at Chelsea means they need regular cash influxes.

Boehly and Clearlake have spent in excess of £1.5billion on new players since their arrival at the club less than three years ago.

Wyness insisted potential surveys and studies into the feasibility of a new stadium build on the Stamford Bridge site may also be costing Chelsea money.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Chelsea have spent a lot of money and these cash injections will go towards servicing those transfers and paying instalments.

“That’s what I think this money is all about. It’s a cash-hungry machine.

“The installments will be adding up.

“There may also be some serious feasibility studies on the stadium and the property around it.

“But I think it’s just day-to-day requirements at the moment. They can’t pay the bills with debt, so they’ve taken the equity with cash.”

Chelsea set for lucrative shirt deal

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Friday (11 April) Chelsea are well placed to agree a lucrative front-of-shirt sponsorship deal if they qualify for the Champions League.

The Premier League side have played without a primary shirt sponsor throughout the current campaign after their deal with Infinite Athlete expired last summer.

Stamford Bridge chiefs have now turned their attention to a shirt deal for next season, with Todd Kline spearheading their commercial operations following his arrival from Tottenham.
