Chelsea player ratings v Crystal Palace: Defender is 9/10

By Dominic Toner

Football Insider rates the Chelsea players after their 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Thibaut Courtois  6 – Was rarely tested by the Palace attack in a scrappy match and kept yet another clean sheet.

Cesar Azpilicueta 9 – Delivered a perfectly weighted cross for Diego Costa’s goal and stuck extremely well to his defensive responsibilities all match.

David Luiz 8 – Looked good in the ariel battles with forward Christian Benteke and is the leader of the Chelsea defence.

Gary Cahill 7 – The England international showed his strengths at defending corners and looks settled in a back three.

Victor Moses 6 – He was asked to do a lot more defending than normal by Palace, something he did adequately.

N’Golo Kante 7 – The combative midfielder once again demonstrated his defensive qualities with tackles and interceptions. Threatened goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey by unleashing a powerful strike from 25 yards. He will miss the next came against Bournemouth through suspension after a fifth yellow card this season.

Nemanja Matic 6 – Was recalled to the side for his defensive solidity and ariel presence, showed good discipline in front of the defence and was composed in possession.

Marcos Alonso 7 – Saw a lot of the ball and was effective offensively, including a free-kick which struck the crossbar. Was tested defensively by Palace’s in-form attacker Wilfried Zaha.

Willian 5 – Was recalled into the starting XI by manager Antonio Conte and delivered a steady performance. The winger is perhaps still lacking a bit of match fitness on his return to the side.

Diego Costa 8 – Scored a well-timed header with his first real opportunity and took his tally to 13 league goals. The striker was involved in some slick Chelsea attacks, but picked up a yellow card and will miss the Bournemouth clash with a one-game suspension.

Eden Hazard 7 – Was extremely busy on his return to the side and showed some incredible injections of pace on the ball. The Belgian is certainly back to his best.
